Celebrating 700 Years of Mexico-Tenochtitlan

As Mexico City prepares to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Mexico-Tenochtitlan's founding, the prominence of its folklore heritage and economic potential is highlighted. The city is not only rich in history but also a vital economic hub, boasting significant commercial ties with the U.S. and a vibrant tourism sector.


Celebrating 700 Years of Mexico-Tenochtitlan

Tourist interests in Mexico City have evolved, increasingly focusing on the folkloric heritage of the 33 neighborhoods that make up the borough. The United States is the main trading partner of the city, representing 60 percent of the total.

In commemoration of the 700th anniversary of the foundation of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, the historical and cultural environment that has been a center of trade and cultural diversity over the centuries is highlighted. Iconic places like the Zócalo, the Templo Mayor, the Cathedral, and the National Palace symbolize Mexico's rich pre-Hispanic and Catholic heritage.

The Cuauhtémoc borough has been noted for its tourist attractions such as the La Merced market, La Lagunilla, and Tepito, contributing to the tourism treasure in the capital. Germany and Canada have increased their interest in Mexico City, with a 14 percent participation in 2023.

According to the National Statistical Directory of Economic Units (DENUE), Cuauhtémoc has 67,357 economic units, making it the second borough with the most businesses in the capital. Furthermore, of the 53,000 accommodation units available in the city, more than half are located in this borough.

Mayor Alessandra Rojo de la Vega has promoted collaboration with business organizations to stimulate economic activity in the region. The tourist potential of the borough is unique as it is the meeting point between America and Europe, representing an opportunity to diversify markets and strengthen the local economy.

In this context, the implementation of a single window for the management of new businesses in the borough is underway, aimed at facilitating formalities and attracting more entrepreneurs to the sector. José Luis Jiménez Barrera, vice president of Government Liaison of Coparmex Mexico City, emphasizes the importance of this collaboration to promote economic development and seize presented opportunities.
